Optimization of reaction variables such as xanthation and oxidation conditions was determined for the encapsulation of EPTC (S‐ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate) and butylate (S‐ethyl diisobutylthiocarbamate) in a crosslinked starch xanthide matrix. Sonification of EPTC and butylate emulsifiable concentrates before encapsulation decreased the size of the cells within the matrix and increased pesticide retention. Pesticide release from the matrix as determined using a constant temperature‐humidity chamber showed that low‐xanthation and sonified encapsulated products gave the slowest pesticide release.
