Gas chromatographic columns of synthesized porous polymer beads can be used to analyze water in volatile organic and inorganic systems. The rapid elution of water with excellent peak shape allows the determination of trace amounts of water in hydrocarbons, alcohols, oxides, glycols, chlorinated hydrocarbons, ammonia, and hydrogen chloride-containing samples. Such columns can be used for on-stream analysis to monitor moisture content and thereby help control corrosion and other problems associated with water in process streams. These column materials have long life and can be used with commonly available thermal conductivity gas-chromatographic apparatus either in laboratory or process analyzers.
