Pineapple and papaya fruits were subjected to induced oviposition by gravid Dacus dorsalis Hendel, females. After the flies oviposited the fruits were stated at 46°, 55°, and 80°F. After varying lengths of time in storage, pupal recoveries were recorded. A definite correlation between temperature and incidence of pupae was noted. Temperatures of 46°F limited development of D. dorsalis in pineapples, whereas in fruits stored at 55°F and above, very low pupal recoveries were observed. Papaya seems to be an excellent host for this fly, as fairly high pupal recoveries were made at all temperatures in these tests. This study also confirms previous observations that pineapples can support an infestation of D. dorsalis. Papayas stored at 46°F and above and pineapples stored above 55° may possibly support development of immature stages of D. dorsalis. This may be due to extension of the period of development because of exposure to low temperatures.
