THE erodibility of two soil materials under varied hydraulic stresses in open channel flow was determined. Observed changes in channel bed roughness during flow events confirmed observations of other researchers. The slope-partitioning method of stress separation was applied in the analysis of the soil erodibilities. A cumulative eroded depth method was used for determining erodibilities. Surface erosion and mass erosion phenomena observed during the tests were described. The results showed the sandy loam to be 80 times more erodible than the clay loam while undergoing surface erosion.
