The efficiency of different advanced oxidation processes for degradation of two phenols, 2,4-dimethylphenol (2,4-DMP) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), has been under study. Advanced oxidation processes, especially the Fe2+/H2O2/ultraviolet (UV) system, were found to be effective in decomposing phenols and chlorophenols. The degradation rate for 2,4-DCP followed the order, H2O2/Fe2+/UV > H2O2/Fe2+> O3/ultrasound (US) > O3≥ O3/UV > UV/H2O2≥ US > UV. The corresponding order for 2,4-DMP was H2O2/Fe2+/UV > O3/US > O3≥ O3/UV > H2O2/Fe2+> US ≥ UV/H2O2> UV.
