Chronic administration of morphine sulfate to rats caused a decrease in accumulation of p-aminohippurate (PAH) by renal cortex slices. No apparent effect on PAH accumulation was observed following a single injection of morphine or when the narcotic was added directly to the incubation medium. Electron microscopic studies showed marked changes in the morphology of the kidney in morphine-treated rats; inconstant but massive macroscopic and microscopic lesions were observed in the renal cortex, medulla, and papilla of rats treated chronically with the narcotic.
