Crystallographic and Mossbauer studies were carried out on the Dy(Fe 1-x Co x ) 3 and Y(Fe 1-x Co x ) 3 intermetallic compounds. The replacement of Fe by Co leads to positive deviations of the a and c lattice parameters from Vegard's law as well as maxima in the 57 Fe hyperfine field and the ordering temperature when x=0.3-0.5. The direction of magnetization of the Y(Fe 1-x Co x ) 3 system is found to change from the b axis ( theta =90 degrees , phi =30 degrees ) at x=0 to the b-c plane ( theta =78 degrees , phi =30 degrees ) at x=0.6. Similarities between the pure Fe-Co binary alloys and pseudobinary R(Fe 1-x Co x ) 2 and R 2 (Fe 1-x Co x ) 17 compounds are also noted.
