With the use of electrothermal-chemical ignition in conjunction with a fire out-of-battery (FOOB) recoil system, the occurrence of a FOOB firing fault mode is significantly reduced, but not eliminated. The application of magneto-rheological (MR) dampers for mitigating the fault modes associated with FOOB (hang-fire, prefire, and misfire) are examined. This is completed using a mathematical model developed to predict the behavior of MR dampers at larger calibers. The results indicate that the MR damper is able to effectively mitigate the FOOB fault modes.
