We have theoretically characterized a negative-index metamaterial (NIM) slab with the aid of an entangled photon pair using a modified Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer. The results we obtained show that the absorption and dispersion properties of the NIM slab can be distinguished in the profile of the fourth-order interference; thus, we can retrieve such parameters easily. A comparison with a coherent light shows the advantages with a quantum field.
