Two inviscid, stratified, shear flow models are studied. The amplitude evolution equations for large‐horizontal‐scale disturbances are derived. Particular attention is given to the case where the flows are marginally stable. In this case the amplitude evolution equations are second order in time. A typical example is the Boussinesq equation.
