The energy resolution of a retarding field energy analyzer, composed of a collector and three metal wire woven plane grids separated by the same distance, is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The resolution is presented in terms of the diameter of the wire, the spacing between wires and the distance between grids. In the test experiment, thermionically generated Cs+ ion beams are used together with 5 sizes of meshes with different grid separations. Good agreement is achieved between the theory and the experimental results.
