Flash vacuum thermolysis (FVT) afforded access to various unstable heterosilenes belonging to the silanimine (R2Si=NR′), phosphasilene (R2Si=PR′) and silanethione (R2Si=S) families. These extremely reactive monomeric compounds have been characterized in the gas phase by direct coupling of FVT with mass, millimetre wave and, particularly, photoelectron spectrometry.
