A striking correlation is found in the charge-density-wave (CDW) conductor O-TaS₃ between its sliding-state broadband noise spectrum and its pinned state ac response. Both show a thermally activated relaxation process with the activation energy equal to the gap parameter {Δ}, implying that both are controlled by the normal electron backflow that screens the CDW fluctuations. Moreover, the distribution functions of relaxation times, normalized to their most probable values, appear to be the same in both cases. Implications for the nature of the sliding state are discussed.
