The ageing of hexagonal ε-FeNx solid solutions with x < 0.25 is studied by Mössbauer spectrometry and X-ray diffraction. The appearance of γ′-Fe4N is preceded by two stages: ε → εp + εr and εp → α″-Fe16N2. The hyperfine parameters are related with interstitial neighbourhood and compared with other values obtained in FeN phases.
