The thermodynamic affinity is calculated for structural relaxation in a liquid and coupled to the diagonal elements of the stress tensor according to a theory by Meixner. It is shown how another pressure term, the "hydrostatic pressure" of hydrodynamics, may be calculated once all the affinities are known. The equation of state may thus be determined near equilibrium. Calculations of ultrasonic absorption are presented for water and ethyl alcohol. In ethyl alcohol, thermal relaxation is found to be the dominant dissipative mechanism.
