Computational study demonstrates a fully coupled hydrodynamic-structural model for floating plates, highlighting its utility for three-dimensional hydroelastic and plastic analysis.
This work presents a novel three-dimensional (3D) time-domain model for fully coupled wave-plate interactions. The model extends the implicit boundary method originally developed for wave-rigid body interaction to handle the wave-deformable structure interaction. The wave hydrodynamics governed by Laplace equation is solved by the boundary integral method (BIM). The structure dynamics governed by virtual work principle is solved by the explicit finite element method (EFEM). Substituting the structural acceleration expression from EFEM governing equation into the structure boundary condition of the BIM modeling, the implicit condition on the deformable structure surface can be derived, which establishes the extra relationship between the time derivative of the potential φ t and its normal derivative φ tn . This BIM-EFEM combination approach enables accurate determination of φ t and hydrodynamic pressure, effectively addressing numerical instabilities associated with φ t calculation. To assess the performance of the present BIM-EFEM model, some representative cases are tested, including the linear wave interaction with a floating elastic plate and nonlinear wave interaction with a floating elastic plate. Results show good agreement with analytical solutions, experimental data, and other numerical results. It can be demonstrated that the present BIM-EFEM model is effective in solving 3D hydroelastic problems. Using this model, the nonlinear interaction between the wave and elastoplastic plate is investigated. It shows its potential for hydroelastoplastic wave-structure interaction analyses.
