Facile syntheses of water-soluble [Cp*Ru(arene)]Cl compounds exploiting the extraordinary properties of [Cp*Ru(μ 3 -Cl)] 4 in aqueous media are described. These methods produce no byproducts, involve little to no workup, and are applicable to almost any simple arene.
