The special challenges to health education presented by the AIDS epidemic are discussed. Relevant previous health education experiences are reviewed, especially in family planning, community-based distribution of contraceptives and the social marketing of condoms. A number of problems are identified in reducing high-risk and promoting safe-sex behaviours. Critical issues are identified, including the cross-cultural validity of health education models, the use of fear appeals in persuasive communications and the role of interpersonal communication and community participation in AIDS education. Priorities for health education research for AIDS in Africa are proposed.
