Over the last decade, larger charities have adopted the techniques of direct marketing to considerable effect. However, the perceptions of direct marketing within the charity sector as a whole are not always positive. Fundraising activities are focused increasingly on those segments of the population that are most responsive and likely to commit to regular giving programmes. This has resulted in the concentration on one demographic segment, at the expense of the potential of others.
