Key result
Goodpasture's syndrome typically presents with rapidly fatal glomerulitis and profuse hemoptysis in young adult males.
Why the study?
Goodpasture's syndrome, characterized by lung purpura and nephritis, can be complicated by the nephrotic syndrome, but detailed clinical descriptions are limited.
Case Report (n=5)
Yes
This early case series describes the clinical presentation of Goodpasture's syndrome complicated by nephrotic syndrome.
May alert clinicians to nephrotic features in Goodpasture's; leaves open need for prospective phenotypic characterization.

The term "Goodpasture's syndrome" was coined by Stanton and Tange (2) when they reported nine other cases with this association, but Rusby and Wilson (3) preferred the term "lung purpura with nephritis" for their five cases. The typical clinical picture is of a young adult male with a rapidly fatal glomerulitis that has many of the features of the 'subacute course' of glomerulonephritis described by Volhard and Fahr (4) and that is either preceded or complicated by repeated and profuse hemoptysis.
