On transformation plasticity

After a short review of transformation plasticity and of the extant models, we propose an expression derived from microscopic first principles for the strain rate increase at constant stress or the stress drop at constant strain rate of solids driven through a phase transition. We also suggest the possibility of a premonitory contribution to transformation plasticity due to a weakening of elastic constants before the transition.
