A method to estimate a transverse correlation length lambda in magnetic thin-film media has been developed. Using a pseudomicrotrack (or filamentary track) analysis, expressions for estimating lambda of the media have been derived. lambda can be determined from the slope of the correlation coefficient of read back signals read at different lateral positions. It was observed that lambda does not strongly depend on the remanent magnetic state for a single-layer medium with strong intergranular coupling but decreases significantly near demagnetization for a multilayer medium.>
