Preoperative vitamin D3 trial evaluates effects on extravascular lung water index and acute lung injury.
Why the study?
Does pre-treatment with a single oral dose of vitamin D3 reduce extravascular lung water index in patients undergoing elective transthoracic oesophagectomy?

Does pre-treatment with a single oral dose of vitamin D3 reduce extravascular lung water index in patients undergoing elective transthoracic oesophagectomy?
This study protocol outlines a trial to determine if a single high dose of preoperative vitamin D3 can reduce early acute lung injury biomarkers following elective oesophagectomy.

Results may guide preoperative optimization in oesophagectomy; extends vitamin D evidence to perioperative lung injury in an RCT.
Parekh et al. (2013) conducted an RCT in Acute lung injury following oesophagectomy (n=80). Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) vs. Placebo was evaluated on Change in extravascular lung water index (EVLWI) measured at the end of the oesophagectomy. Vitamin D3 (300,000 IU) administered seven days prior to oesophagectomy is being evaluated in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial to determine its effect on extravascular lung water index and acute lung injury.
