A new ultracompact optical gas sensor based on photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam cavity coupled to tapered fiber is proposed. The nanobeam cavity adopted has seven pairs tapered air holes and ten pairs mirror holes, with Q factor of 2.2 × 10 6 when air refractive index (RI) equals 1, mode volume (V) of 0.29( λ/n ) 3 , and the volume of 12 × 0.5 × 0.25 μm 3 . Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used to calculate the resonance wavelength of nanobeam under different RIs of gas. A change of RI leading to a linear change of resonance wavelength is proved (about 0.19 nm per 10 -3 RI change).
