Summary During a course of teacher‐training an investigation was carried out regarding the question: “Do changes occur in teacher‐anxiety and teacher‐concerns of students, and what are the nature and causes of these changes?" To this end questionnaires were completed by the students at the beginning and the end of the course and interviews and personal reports from six students were studied. In this way it was possible to get a matching between the quantitative results of the questionnaires and the qualitative data of the interviews and the reports. This matching has been given shape in a description of the development of the individual students. This description is given in terms of changes in the ‘subjective educational theory’ of a student. Using the concept ‘subjective educational theory’ it is possible to develop a general framework by which a more systematic investigation of changes in students can be carried out.
