The hydrolysis of iron (III) has been investigated at 25 °C in 1.0 mol dm–3 NaClO4, KNO3, and KCl media. The high ionic strength was unavoidable because of the low pH values involved. The results (–log βpq) obtained for [Fep(OH)q](3p–q)+ are: NaClO4, –log β11= 2.73(0.006), –log β12= 6.29(0.009), –log β22= 3.20(0.004); KNO3, –log β11= 2.77(0.014), –log β12= 6.61(0.037), –log β22= 3.22(0.011), –log β34= 6.98(0.035); KCl, –log β11= 3.21 (0.023), –log β12= 6.73(0.029), –log β22= 4.09(0.037), –log β34= 7.58(0.042), the estimated standard deviations being given in parentheses. Some general principles involved in the study of hydrolytic equilibrium systems are discussed.
