This investigation evaluated the structural and tribological evolution, as well as the corro-erosive response, of TiVCN coatings deposited by reactive sputtering as a function of the vanadium target power (400-550 W). Through XRD and XPS characterization, it was determined that vanadium atoms substitute for titanium atoms in the FCC crystal structure. This solid solution mechanism induces lattice contraction and grain refinement, resulting in a highly compact microstructure. Tribological tests against a WC sphere showed that a higher vanadium content produce a significant reduction in friction coefficient and wear area. This tribological behavior is attributed to solid solution hardening combined with the formation of a self-lubricating V 2 O 5 tribofilm. Under corro-erosive conditions, the microstructural densification restricts electrolyte permeation. Simultaneously, the stable V 2 O 5 passive layer improves polarization resistance and minimizes corrosion rates. Overall, the 550 W TiVCN coating provides the optimal balance between tribomechanical and electrochemical stability, proving highly effective in protecting components in harsh environments.
