A comparative study of some well‐known interionic model potentials is carried out by computing anharmonic properties of alkali halides. The importance of including the zero point energy and the Van der Waals contributions properly is emphasised. Recently reported values of the Van der Waals term are employed to redetermine the unknown parameters of the potential. A comparison with experiment is made. It is concluded that the potential form proposed by Born and Mayer comes closest to the experimental situation.
