A uniform increase in epiphyseal density was noted on hand radiographs of 1 in 300 clinically well children. Associated findings included retarded maturation of the hand, particularly the phalanges. Very dense epiphyses seem to occur with increased frequency in Cockayne's syndrome, rhinotrichophalangeal syndrome, and various types of multiple epiphyseal dysplasia.
