Arsenic concentrations were measured in soils and plants of several mining areas in western Spain (Salamanca province). Soils situated near the mine spoil contain extreme levels of As ( > 1000 ppm); nevertheless the geochemical dispersion halo around the mines is not very wide ( ≤ 500 m). Arsenic contents in the herbage range of 0.09 to 3,475 ppm and Agrostis truncatula presents the highest values which could be due to their ability to develop tolerance to As. A significant correlation was found between As in soil and As in all plant species of grass studied.
