The microbial composition of plaque differed between samples from different bracket materials and between samples from coronal junctions of orthodontic bands luted by different dental cements. The proportion of S. mutans was significantly greater in plaque from plastic brackets and from junctions of bands luted by zinc phosphate cement than in plaque from metal brackets and from junctions of bands luted by copper cement, respectively. The proportion of S. sanguis in plaque showed the same pattern, although the differences were less pronounced.
