A recent study implicates the enzyme poly(adenosine 5′-diphosphate-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1) as a mediator of neuronal cell death in Parkinson’s disease. The findings also provide support for a class of FDA-approved drugs that inhibit PARP1, currently used in the treatment of certain breast and ovarian cancers, as candidate drugs for Parkinson’s disease.
