Iris plants have immense medicinal importance and are therefore used in the treatment of cancer, inflammation, bacterial and viral infections (Nadkarni, 1976). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of the petroleum ether extract (oil) of the plant have resulted in the identification of eleven compounds, 9-hexadecanoic acid methyl ester, 9-octadecenoic acid methyl ester, 8-octadecenoic acid methyl ester, 11-octadecenoic acid methyl, 10-octadecenoic acid methyl ester, 13-octadecenoic acid methyl ester, 16-octadecenoic acid methyl ester, 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid diisooctyl ester, bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, methyl 6-methyl heptanoate and nonanoic acid, 9-oxo-methyl ester. The bioassay of petroleum ether extract (oil) showed that, it is potent against for antimicrobial and antioxidantactivities.
