Several selenium derivatives were injected into 4-day old chick embryos and their LD 50 values were calculated. A recently identified excretory product from rats was shown to be low in toxicity to chick embryos. The most toxic compound in the series studied was methylseleninic acid. Embryonic monstrosities were produced in this study especially by the injection of sodium selenite or selenomethionine. The data are discussed with respect to how they agree with the pathway of selenium reduction proposed for molds.
