The optical potential method of Feshback (1962) is applied to describe the effects of post-collision interaction in electron impact excitation of helium near the thresholds of autoionizing states. The resulting formalism is a generalization of the standard theory of resonances. The shake-down model of King et al. (1975) is obtained from an exact expression after several drastic but well defined approximations.
