This paper reports a study of the effect of phosphorus segregation on the Intergranular stress corrosion cracking of a 3.5Ni-1.7Cr steel in 9M NaOH. It is shown that phosphorus, when segregated to the grain boundaries, can enhance the susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking in caustic solutions. The magnitude of this effect depends upon the extent of grain boundary phosphorus segregation. This intergranular cracking can be prevented if phosphorus is removed from the steel.
