SUMMARY The effects of GABA and acetylcholine were studied in cats with subcortical epileptogenic foci in the right hippocampus and secondary epileptiform activity in the homologous region of the opposite hemisphere (the mirror focus). Topical application of acetylcholine produced: (1) activation of the normally discharging tissues of both the primary and secondary foci; (2) acceleration of epileptiform activity in the mirror focus over that in the region where alumina was injected; and (3) increased paroxysmal susceptibility. Topical application of GABA resulted in: (1) inhibition of spontaneous epileptiform activity in the primary and secondary foci of rhinencephalic structures characterized by long duration; and (2) diminution in amplitude of the surface‐negative wave of the evoked responses obtained from rhinencephalic structures elicited by stimulation of the olfactory bulb.
