The total synthesis of an antifungal novel amino acid derivative, sphingofungin D (N-acetyl asperfungin) starting from myo-inositol and (R)-epoxyoctane is described. This synthetic study showed that the undetermined stereochemistry at C-14 in sphingofungins should be R.
