Explosions in cold, homogeneous atmospheres are considered; initially the mean free path of an explosive-product atom through the atmosphere is much longer than the dimension of the expanding material. On the basis that a uniform expansion persists for all time, a snowplow model is derived from the virial theorem and is used to describe the expansion. To illustrate the method, a chemical explosion in the earth's atmosphere at 150-km altitude is analyzed.
