A simple method for detection of glycosidic bound monoterpenes and other volatiles occurring in fresh plant material was developed. The fresh plant material was ‘stabilized’ in boiling water according to Bourquelot, the volatile oil components removed by hydrodistillation and extraction, the remaining aqueous extract treated with β‐glucosidase, and the monoterpenes and other volatiles, formed during the enzymatic hydrolysis, isolated as a group and subsequently analysed by gas chromatography.
