A G Tenner and M J G Veltman Amsterdam: North Holland 1972 pp viii + 472 price £37·50 When the 'Rochester' series of international conferences on high energy physics went biennial in 1960, the particle physicists of Europe, faced with the bleak prospect of alternate summers with nowhere to go, invented the biennial European conferences on Elementary Particle Physics, the first of which was held at Aix en Provence in 1961. To be fair to the originators of the series, their primary purposes were to educate young physicists in this fast developing field and to promote its study in Europe.
