Progressive changes in soil moisture profiles and temperature profiles have been monitored during the seasonal freezing of a gray-brown luvisol. Calculations accounting for deformation of the coordinate system have been performed to permit accurate estimates of the vertical displacement of the ground surface and the penetration of the 0 °C isotherm. Problems associated with collecting an appropriate data set in order to test numerical models of coupled transport of water and heat under field conditions are discussed.
