Photochromic host−guest inclusion compounds were obtained by growing crystals of γ-cyclodextrin in the presence of substituted photochromic spiropyrans. The relative stabilities of the photogenerated photomerocyanine guests inside the host structure were determined. Interactions in the solid state selectively enhanced the aldehyde-substituted photomerocyanine relative to other substituents in the host−guest crystals.
