Very high electron mobility is reported for the liquid-crystalline oxadiazole compound hexyloxyphenyl hexyloxybiphenyl oxadiazole (HOBP-OXD). The synthesis, phase-transition behavior, and electron transport properties of this compound are detailed. HOBP-OXD is found to exhibit one nematic and two smectic phases. A jump in electron mobility is observed at the phase transition between the two smectic phases, leading to the conclusion that liquid-crystalline textures govern the electron mobility through molecular order.
