Volatile compounds excreted by different strains of Synechococcus have been studied. The lipophilic components were extracted from the cell-free culture medium by resin sorption techniques. XAD-20 and Tenax GC were used to concentrate less volatile excretion products for GC/MS identification. Major compounds released were 6-methylhept-5-en-2-one, dihydroactinidiolide and tetrahydrogeranyl acetone suggesting that the formation of excretion products in Synechococcus is closely connected to the metabolism of lipids and carotenoids.
