A systematic method for transforming the Lax hierarchy of the modified Korteweg-do Vries (MKdV) equation u t =-∂/∂ x (δ I n /δ u ) into bilinear equations is developed, where I n is the n -th conserved quantity of the MKdV equation and δ/δ u denotes the functional derivative. The N -soliton solutions of these higher-order equations are also presented.
