The Council of CERN has unanimously backed the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as the particle physics laboratory's next project. At a Council meeting late in December the member states asked CERN director-general, Carlo Rubbia, to produce detailed information on the project's technical feasibility, final costs and sources of funding, by the end of 1993. They also expect non-member states to contribute about 20% of the construction costs, currently estimated at SFr 2000m (£790m) The Council approved the laboratory's 1992 budget of SFr 910m.
