Sodium saccharin in concentrations from 0.02 to 20.00 mg/ml inhibits the in vitro growth of glucose-grown cariogenic and other streptococci, and suppresses, esp. at the higher concentration range, the fermentative acid production of these microorganism s to acid levels much lower than the critical pH of 5.5. These observations indicate a possible caries antagonism by saccharin.
