Structural changes during the hardening of silicone films and in testing environments such as SO2, Na2S04, are described. An attempt is made to clarify the attack mechanism of SO2 on the silicone films.Problems directly relevant to conservation practice are discussed, including processes taking place during salt crystallization In porous stone and the effectiveness of destructive tests in SO2 atmosphere and during frost-defrost cycles.
