A semiclassical calculation is made of the total reaction cross sections for composite projectiles (d and α) on ¹²C, ¹⁶O, and ⁴⁰Ca target nuclei at medium energy (250Ec.m.A300 MeV/nucleon). The internal motion of the nucleons in the projectile is taken into account adiabatically. An effective nuclear radius is obtained which is much smaller than the sum of the sharp-cutoff radii of target and projectile. Contrary to the suggestion of DeVries and Peng, nuclei are found to be less transparent to composite projectiles than to protons.NUCLEAR REACTIONS Adiabatic effect on the total reaction cross sections of d- and α-projectile collisions; 250Ec.m.A300 MeV/nucleon; ¹²C, ¹⁶O, ⁴⁰Ca targets.
